The new issue of Quaternaire journal (Vol 30 No 2) has been published

Dedicated to the publications of the Q11 symposium held in Orléans in 2018, it first takes us to the Bao Bolon Valley in Senegal for a paleoenvironmental study of the second half of the Holocene (Stern et al., 2019). Back in France, in the Somme Valley, paleontological and geochronological data allow a reinterpretation of the archaeological site of Menchecourt (Bahain et al., 2019). Which large animals lived in the vicinity of the Neandertal occupations of the Ramandils cave (Port-la-Nouvelle, Aude, France)? Rush et al. (2019) study their assemblages to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental and paleoclimatic framework during the Late Pleistocene.

Two articles are devoted to the region of Orleans which hosted the Q11 symposium. Coussot et al. (2019) describe the chronostratigraphy of the filling of a palaeovallon by silt in the context of the Beauceron plateau at Courville-sur-Eure (Eure-et-Loir, France), which extends from the second half of the Middle Pleistocene to the Holocene. From a sedimentary filling section at the prehistoric site of La Roche-Cotard IV (Indre-et-Loire, France), Marquet et al. (2019) conclude that the parietal productions with a symbolic character of the cave are very probably the work of the Neanderthal Man.

Finally, Armynot of Châtelet et al. (2019) have characterized foraminifers to reconstruct the environment of the Merovingian and Carolingian emporium of Quentovic, in the mouth of the Canche (France).

In 2020, the AFEQ-CNF INQUA will reward for the first time a francophone professional whose career has been devoted to the study of Quaternary whatever the discipline concerned. Dedicated to be awarded every two years, this distinction honors Henriette Alimen (1900-1996), a French geologist known for her many works on the Quaternary of the Pyrenees and Africa, former president of the Société Géologique de France and founder of the Laboratory of Quaternary Geology of Marseille-Luminy.

Each nomination must be submitted by two members of the AFEQ-CNF INQUA, at least one of whom does not belong to the same laboratory as the person proposed. The assessment of the files is entrusted to the Association Council (CA), assisted if necessary by external stakeholders. The final decision is voted on by the CA. The selection criteria include the candidate’s national and international scientific outreach and the services provided to AFEQ-CNF INQUA or other international associations working for the Quaternary.

The first Henriette Alimen medal will be awarded in February 2020 at the Quaternaire Q12 symposium in Paris by the President of AFEQ-CNF INQUA and the laureate will give a presentation of his work on this occasion.

12th AFEQ-CNF INQUA conference : Paris 2020

The next conference of the AFEQ-CNF INQUA will be held from February 3 to 5, 2020 on the Condorcet Campus in Aubervilliers, north of Paris. Organized by the Laboratory of Physical Geography (UMR8591) of Meudon, Q12 aims to: (1) present news research carried out and associated results; (2) discuss new investigation methods and their multiple applications in response to the issues raised and the various environments; (3) to feed the discussion around the contribution of this research to the issues facing the environment and society.
It will hold 8 sessions presented in the first circular available here: Circular Q12.

For this edition of the Quaternary conferences, the AFEQ-CNF INQUA is associated with the GFG (French Group of Geomorphology). Thus, the Days of Young Geomorphologists (JJG), dedicated to the diffusion and promotion of the work of PhD students and young PhDs in geomorphology, will be held in the aftermath on 6 and 7 February.

Death of émilie campmas

Emilie CAMPMAS (1983-2019)

Emilie passed away on Friday, March 8, 2019 after five years of tenacious struggle against this terrible disease that is cancer. After having held, from 2014 to 2016, an ATER position at the Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès, she had recently joined CNRS as a researcher at the TRACES laboratory. A relentless worker, with bulimia of knowledge, Emilie was a young researcher out of the ordinary as much for her dynamism, her scientific rigor, her sense of the collective, her so communicative enthusiasm ! Laureate of several prizes, including a L’Oréal France thesis grant for women and science in 2011 or more recently the Young Researcher Award in Prehistoric and Anthropological Archeology from SAMRA and the Award from Fondation des Treilles, she became in a few years an essential researcher enjoying full recognition in the field of expertise that was her: the adaptation to the coastal environment of Paleolithic hunters-collectors.

An archaeozoologist specialized in large fauna and malacofauna, Emilie launched her career during a Master 1 course conducted at UTAH in 2006 on the fauna from the excavation materials of cave Abri du Moulin in Troubat. Her doctorate “Characterization of the occupation of the sites of the region of Temara (Morocco) in the Upper Pleistocene and new data on the subsistence of Middle Paleolithic men of North Africa: Examples of taphonomic and archeozoological approaches carried out on the faunas of El Harhoura 2 and El Mnasra “, that she defended in 2012 at the University of Bordeaux 1, was the starting point of her problematic on coastal economies. Having demonstrated, thanks to an exemplary taphonomic study of the faunal assemblages, the decisive role of the littoral in the modalities of occupation of the territories by the Aterian and then Ibero-Amaurian human groups, her results had then brought her to be interested in the thorny issue of cultural modernity for these “archaic” populations. The early diversification of food resources, especially the consumption of marine shellfish, coupled with the presence of Nassarius sp. symbolic markers, had allowed her to draw a convincing parallel with what is observed in South Africa’s anatomically modern men, opening up new perspectives on the evolutionary trajectories of these populations and the role played by coastal environments in the emergence of so-called modern behaviors. On these issues, she co-organized two sessions: one in 2016, at the SAfA Congress “The role of North Africa in the emergence and development of modern behaviors: Integrated Approach”, the other in 2018 PANAF Congress “Diversity of hominin subsistence strategies across Africa from the Middle Pleistocene to the Holocene”.

In parallel with these major anthropological questions, the fine analysis of the bone material was at the heart of Emilie’s approach. Particularly active in the field of taphonomy with her strong involvement in the European Network for Quaternary Taphonomy, Emilie was also a field scientist. Since 2006, she was a member of the Franco-Moroccan mission “El Harhoura-Témara” and in 2016 she led an ethnographic mission on the coastal fringe of the Atlantic around Rabat-Témara to combine archaeological and ethnological data for the exploitation of marine molluscs. In order to fully discuss the complementarity of terrestrial and marine animal resources, she had expanded her areas of expertise to the field of malacology, leading her to train with Catherine Dupont and begin to develop experimental approaches on the use of mollusc shells as a butcher’s knife. Seeking to understand the diversity of coastal adaptations, she was just beginning to extend her research to the entire circummediterranean zone both in the Neanderthals of the European Pleistocene and in the fully anatomically modern humans of the late Upper Pleistocene and early Holocene in North Africa and Eurasia. During all these years, I had the chance to work with her first as a supervisor alongside Patrick Michel and then as a colleague. I salute here her courage and her scientific career so rich and intellectually stimulating. Emilie, we’ll miss you …

Call for papers for papers for the journal Méditerranée : “Littoral Landscapes: Evolution and Risk of Erosion of Heritage”

Call for papers for a special issue of the journal Méditerranée entitled “Coastal landscapes: evolution and risk of heritage erosion” (issue coordinators: Benoît Devillers, Pau Olmos Benlloch and Père Castanyer).

One of the forgotten planning policies related to the current retreat of the shorelines is the erosion of the natural, archaeological and geomorphological Heritage. At the European scale, several initiatives have highlighted the vulnerability of heritage to the effects of climate change and human pressure. The conservation and mediation of this fragile heritage are actual challenges. The protection of the archaeological heritage of the coastal area is lagging far behind marine and especially continental areas. The reasons are many: difficulty of excavations, high erosion rate, lack of definition of administrative skills and very strong land pressure.

Currently, several European research teams are working on coastal erosion and archaeological heritage, particularly on the Atlantic seaboard: ALeRT project (UMR 6566 CReAAH Rennes); Litaq (Ausonius, Bordeaux); SCHARP (University of Saint Andrews, Scotland); CITiZAN (Museum of London Archeology, England); Bregantia (INCIPIT, Galicia, Spain); MASC project (Institute of Technology Sligo, Ireland). The main results were presented at international conferences such as the Homer symposium (Vannes, Brittany, 2011), the Weather Beaten Archeology (Sligo, Ireland, 2015) conferences or during specific sessions in the symposium of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) (Helsinki, 2012 and Glasgow, 2015) or Landscape Archeology Conference (Uppsala, 2016).

The various works carried out in the Atlantic facade show the need for projects to inventory and monitor site erosion. Storm episodes in recent years (2010, 2014) have accelerated the process of destruction and discovery of archaeological sites. In the Mediterranean, the situation is different, the climatic events are less violent, but there is a slow and gradual erosion, particularly in relation with the urbanization of the coasts. However, there are exceptions where sea-level rise, over-spells and anthropogenic pressure are accelerating the process of coastal erosion and destruction of archaeological heritage, as is the case of Kerkennah archipelago in Tunisia.

On the east and central Mediterranean coast, other initiatives have emerged, notably the project “Noé cartodata: carte de risque du patrimoine” (2006-2010) which aimed at developing a reflection on the protection of cultural heritage in the face of natural hazards. More recently, the European project CLIMA (Cultural Landscape Risk Identification Management Assessment) has taken up this issue on the analysis of soil erosion processes and archaeological remains. While these projects are mainly oriented towards monumental heritage, they have a similar basis to projects that focus on the archaeological heritage of the western Mediterranean coast.

The call for papers concerns two main themes

1 – Coastal paleo-landscapes: a heritage to reveal

Recent studies are changing the vision of coastal history from their archaeological and geomorphological points of view. This issue is an opportunity to present new research that is distinguished by their acuteness of restitution of these landscapes or by the innovative contributions to the coastal evolution knowledge, whether from geoarchaeological or archaeological points of view. In the end, the data produced constitutes a heritage that can lead to valorization through a mediation process. From the geological and geomorphological studies in progress on the littoral they can also integrate research and management’s tools of the littoral territory.

2 – Inventory and protection of coastal memory

The second objective is the sharing of the state of the art of the erosion of the coastal heritage as well as the sharing of the methods of work concerning its valuation or preservation. We propose to publish the feedback of experiences in participatory sciences and social tools on this theme. The ultimate goal is to highlight the potential of this type of initiative in the face of weak policy action.

The AFEQ-CNF INQUA is an association that moves!

An annual excursion (soon Portugal!), A biennial Q colloquium in which are awarded a thesis prize and soon a medal honoring a remarkable career (more information to come …), a specialized day with the SGF Each year (this year: the Mediterranean), funding is awarded each year to a dozen or so young researchers to help them participate in international symposia … all of which reflect a dynamic, diverse and united community.

The AFEQ-CNF INQUA is also, of course, a specialized journal, independent and of quality: Quaternary. If you have subscribed, you have already been able to test this year’s online access to the journal as soon as it is published. Next year, you can choose to go digital or continue to receive your paper fascicles: an evolution that was expected …

Death of Jean Sommé

We have just learned of the death of Jean Sommé on September 20, 2018. Jean Sommé, Emeritus Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Lille and former President of the AFEQ has been an active, respected and appreciated person in the community since the early 1960s. He had a talent for expressing himself clearly and precisely, both in his writings and in his figures and maps. He handled the concepts with rigor and did not hesitate to shake up conventional thinking and ill-founded precepts. The AFEQ-CNF INQUA, in collaboration with the SGN and INRAP, paid tribute to him last fall through a study day on the theme of the “plains of northern France” and celebrated with him the 40 years of the publication of his state thesis.

We lose a lively and passionate spirit, a colleague, a friend …
Our thoughts are with the members of his family.

Southern Hemisphere Assessment of PalaeoEnvironments (SHAPE)

The research aligned to the PALCOM International Focus group SHAPE has sought to reconstruct atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns and climate dynamics through glacial-interglacial cycles using both proxy data and climate model simulations. Regional and intra-hemispheric collaborations that have started in SHAPE have gathered information from spatially-distributed climate reconstructions and revealed important patterns and dynamics in the global circulation system. In this session, we will focus particularly on work that has refined our understanding of the behaviour of key Southern Hemisphere climate modes and used integrative approaches and model simulations to understand regional observations, triggers of climate change, climate dynamics, and mechanisms of intra- and inter-hemispheric climate teleconnections from a holistic Southern Hemisphere or global perspective. This session welcomes all presentations regarding proxy development, tools and techniques, key findings, data syntheses and modelling results relating to Southern Hemisphere Quaternary climate change.

Orbital and millennial scale climate changes in ice, ocean and land: observations and model simulations

Integrating long paleoclimatic series from different Earth’s archives is crucial for understanding the mechanisms of climatic changes during the Quaternary. First, this integration documents the nature and timing of the different regional environmental responses to a given climate change; secondly, it provides an array of hypotheses against which to benchmark model experiments. In this session we invite presentations dealing with major and still-unresolved questions in Quaternary climates such as: a) what is the regional response of the different glacial-interglacial cycles?; b) what is the potential contribution of the different internal feedbacks in explaining the Middle Pleistocene Transition?; c) what are the mechanisms explaining the Mid-Brunhes Event in CO2 concentrations with lower values during interglacials before, compared to after, 430 ka?; or d) are the interactions between millennial and orbital climate variability the potential missing piece in the puzzle of Ice Age cycles?

Multiproxy studies on continental carbonates: palaeoclimates and palaeoenvironments

Continental carbonates have been extensively studied during the last few decades as supports for multidisciplinary palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental research. Most efforts have been concentrated on speleothems, but investigations on tufa, travertine, lacustrine, palustrine, soil, and biogenic (shells, earthworm granules, etc.) carbonates are also rapidly developing with improved and new technologies. Continental carbonates are highly suitable for combining geochemical approaches (e.g. stable isotopes) with direct dating on calcite (14C, U-Th series, ESR) or grains embedded in calcite (OSL). Additionally, in most cases, bioproxies (pollen, molluscs, leaf imprint, etc.) usually associated with these carbonates allow synergic and independent palaeoenvironmental investigations.

The present session aims to illustrate the wide diversity of climatic and environmental data obtained from carbonates in continental archives. Contributions presenting multidisciplinary approaches are highly welcome. Continental carbonates from any kind of crystallisation processes (physicochemical/biological) or environments (open-air, karst, soils, thermal or meteoric water, etc.) should be represented. Finally, we encourage authors to discuss their own data regarding other regional to globally significant records, which would highlight the important contribution of continental carbonate studies to the understanding of past climate and environment dynamics.

Are Heinrich Stadials cooling or warming events, or both?

Heinrich stadials are an intrinsic feature of Earth’s climate system and are associated with large-scale, typically rapid shifts in temperature, precipitation, ocean circulation, and atmospheric chemistry. In the North Atlantic Ocean, these events are also characterised by the deposition of ice-rafted ‘Heinrich layers’. Thanks in large part to the methodologic refinement of palaeoclimate proxies, the last decade has seen a remarkable increase in the spatial coverage and quality of climate data pertaining to Heinrich stadials, particularly those during the last glacial maximum and termination. In the Southern Hemisphere, and potentially also the tropics, Heinrich stadials appear to have been distinct warming events marked by massive deglaciation and ocean-surface heating. In contrast, the prevailing view from the Northern Hemisphere is one of Heinrich stadial cooling, linked to weakening of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Yet emerging data from both the marine and terrestrial realms hint at elements of boreal stadial warmth, raising the question of whether Heinrich stadials in these latitudes are also periods of amplified seasonality.

The goal of this session is to bring together the latest terrestrial and marine data from key sites in order to review, holistically, our understanding of Heinrich stadials as abrupt climate change events: how they are manifest, and the driving processes involved. Our particular emphasis is on the most recent stadial events, for which data are generally most abundant, but we stress the temporal and geographic scope of this session is broad. Ultimately, we aim to foster a new discussion on the impact and causes of Heinrich stadials, based around well-dated palaeoclimate records and taking into account both the marine and terrestrial contexts.

Following the meeting, it is our intention to publish a special volume based on this session in Quaternary International (or Paleoceanography & Paleoclimate?).

Earthquake Geology and Seismic Hazards: from Earthquake Mapping of historical and prehistoric earthquakes to paleoseismology

This session, supported by the IFG on Earthquake Geology and Seismic Hazards, encourages contributions dealing with multidisciplinary approaches (fault trenching, geophysics, remote sensing, dating, etc.) applied to earthquake geology, paleoseismology, and fault specific seismic hazard assessment. Geological approaches are very important because they provide insights on the long-term behavior of fault-networks, a keystone of seismic hazard studies. Quantitative assessments include geologically recorded slip rates, earthquake time history and magnitude of large paleo-events. Earthquake geology is also the key approach to analysis of surface faulting hazard that could threaten facilities or infrastructures. Recent techniques and developments allow the quantification of the overall surface deformation during historical and recent surface-breaking earthquakes, contributing to the improvement of future Fault Displacement Hazard analyses. This session will particularly examine: i) how to improve the capability of the recognition and characterization of Quaternary capable faults, ii) how to strengthen our knowledge of the relation between surface faulting produced by earthquakes vs earthquake sizes and earthquake fault parameters, both being key aspects in Ground Shaking estimation iii) upgrade the existing EEE (Earthquake Environmental Effects) database.

The European Loess Belt – a high-resolution archive of rapid environmental change

Detecting rapid climate changes during the Last Glacial in Greenland ice cores (D-O cycles) has generated major research efforts during the last 20 years to evidence their impact on European environments using sedimentary archives and especially loess-palaeosol records. Indeed, the great European Loess Belt is ideally located with respect to the Ice sheets and the North Atlantic Ocean to record this impact in both loess and palaeosols. In this context it has been proposed in 2001 to focus on a transect through the northern branch of the European loess belt during the INQUA-SEQS meeting in Kyiv.

High-resolution pedostratigraphic approaches coupled with sedimentological analysis (especially particle grain-size), led to the discovery of millennial-scale cyclic loess-palaeosols alternations correlated to Greenland stadial-interstadials cycles. Moreover, several horizons of periglacial structures were observed within loess series testifying of at least four permafrost development and degradation phases between about 60 and 20 ka.

The session will gather presentations and posters focusing on:

1) High resolution stratigraphy and reconstruction of palaeoenvironmental conditions combining multi-proxy approaches of the best loess-palaeosol sequences: sedimentology, bio-indicators, soil geochemistry, organic biomarkers, environmental magnetism, periglacial features …

2) Updating the geochronological frame by coupling luminescence and 14C dating methods, focusing especially on new developments in dating techniques.

3) Developments in data-model (numerical) comparisons to test palaeoclimate configurations leading to stadial-interstadial successions and phases of permafrost development and decrease (ice-sheets, sea surface conditions, wind power and directions …).

4) Understanding the impact of climate change on Palaeolithic peopling of the great European loess plain.

Heinrich events in Terrestrial archives

Heinrich events were catastrophic collapses of continental ice sheets during glacial periods. At that time, vast quantities of icebergs more or less periodically calved into the North Atlantic, causing an interruption of the oceanic heat conveyor belt leading to dramatic changes of the climate on a global scale for a period of several hundreds of years. They are not only an interesting paleo-climatological phenomenon but also a stratigraphic and diagnostic tool for climate and environmental reconstructions.

Linking evidences on rapid climate changes in terrestrial archives to similar marine phenomena such as Heinrich Events is challenging. The session aims to transfer knowledge obtained from marine records unto the land surface. We invite contributions that aim to bridge between disciplines. We especially ask young researchers to present their ideas.

The Future of Quaternary Geochronology

Many of the techniques utilised in Quaternary geochronology have evolved in recent years allowing higher precision, longer timescales or wider ranging applications. Intercomparison exercises and re-measurement of standards have enhanced the accuracy. In addition new methods for calculating ages from raw measurements have been developed, as well as the incorporation of associated information (e.g. stable isotopes, sediment properties, models of the underlying system, etc.) into statistical models to provide improved corrections or interpretation of results. This session will highlight current and potential advances in geochronological techniques over the entire range of the Quaternary as well as novel or complex applications and integration of records and timescales using these methods.

Quaternary data without frontiers: the International Quaternary Map of Europe 1 : 2.5 Million

The International Quaternary Map of Europe is an international cooperation project , coordinated by BGR, that began at 2011 at INQUA in Bern. There are by now 31 national geological surveys (including Russia) participating  together with a supporting board of academic advisors  contributing to this project.

This map is coordinated and compiled at BGR in international cooperation under the umbrella of CGMW and INQUA.

Subjects to be addressed encompass e.g. onshore/-off shore mapping, glacial extent, glaciated versus non-glaciated areas, regional characteristics, mountains and lowlands, standards and rationalization of terminology, active faults, critical palaeontological and Palaeolithic sites, permafrost distribution, isostacy, direction of ice movements, etc.
